Coontie stays low, rarely needs water once established, and works well in mass plantings under trees.

American beautyberry, Callicarpa americana, produces clusters of vivid purple fruit that birds and small mammals eat through fall and winter, while its flowers support insects in summer.

Smell the air on a windy afternoon if you are near the coast.

Those observations will do more to predict success than any statewide plant list.
