For fruit that has already crossed the breaker stage, a countertop at room temperature is actually a friendlier environment than a garden baking in afternoon sun.

The goal is to keep the fruit in the range where ripening chemistry works well, roughly 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit for active ripening, without the added heat and radiation of the garden.

Set the tomatoes in a single layer with a little space between them so air can circulate.

Light is not required for ripening, and a sunny windowsill can raise the fruit surface temperature enough to slow the very process you are trying to encourage.
