Eggshells Do Not End A Slug Attack

Few gardening tips travel faster than the eggshell trick.
Crush them up, scatter them around your hostas, and the slugs will supposedly refuse to cross the sharp edges.
Coffee grounds get the same treatment.
Both show up in every gardening group, every spring, without fail.
The problem is that they do not work reliably.
