For a gardener near Altoona, where the average first frost falls around October 4, that puts the topping window in roughly late August to early September.

Elevation and local terrain shift things further.

Gardens in the Allegheny Plateau or the Pocono highlands often see frost noticeably earlier than the nearest town’s official average, because cold air settles into low spots and valleys at night.
