Walk out to your garden on a late July evening in Pennsylvania and you might spot a fat orb-weaver hanging in a dewy web between the shrubs, completely unbothered.
Somewhere nearby, spotted lanternflies are likely working their way up a maple or black walnut trunk, feeding on sap and leaving a sticky mess behind.
The good news is that the spiders already living in your yard may occasionally add some natural pressure on those lanternflies, and you do not have to buy a thing to support them.
The honest version of that promise is a little smaller than the headline suggests, and understanding exactly what spiders can and cannot do will help you protect your trees more effectively this summer.
The Useful Answer Is Spiders—With a Smaller Promise

Spiders are the quiet garden predator worth paying attention to here, and Pennsylvania yards are genuinely full of them.
